Understanding Smart City Technology

Urban areas around the globe are embracing the newest developments in modern technology by becoming smart cities. These cities integrate sensors and actuators and link them together to collect data. We were intrigued when we first learned about smart cities, so we began doing our own research to discover additional details and we wanted to share this information with others. When you read these articles you'll learn how smart city technology uses the data that's gathered to monitor energy usage in homes and buildings to analyze their energy efficiency. You'll also find out about smart transportation, which entails installing cameras in traffic lights to monitor the flow of traffic. We hope that when you read these and other articles on this site you'll gain a better understanding of smart city technology.

Tips For Installing Your Home Security Camera

by Gina Reid

Do you want to improve the security of your home by installing cameras? If so, it will help to know the following tips to learn how to install the cameras around your home.

Come Up With A Plan Before You Buy Anything

Don't make the mistake of purchasing a security camera system without a plan in mind. You want to buy a system that is going to work for your home, and the last thing you want to do is purchase something that doesn't end up working. For example, find out how you can run wires to the cameras and if there is a place you can hide the wires. Decide on how many cameras are practical to install so you do not buy a set with extra equipment you don't need.

Go online and print out a satellite view of your home, and then identify the areas that you want to watch with a security camera. You may be interested in seeing your main entry doors, windows, gates, and things of that nature. Decide on where you can place the minimal amount of cameras to cover all of your areas of entry to ensure that you do not go overboard with monitoring equipment.

Don't Depend On Wireless Cameras

Many homeowners think that the easiest way to install security cameras is to have them be wireless. While you may think this makes the system easier to install, it will actually make it harder to run. WiFi is not a dependable way to transmit the constant data from your security cameras, and you still need to run power to the camera as well. You will be better off installing a wired solution that uses Ethernet cables. You can use a PoE (Power Over Ethernet) adapter to run power to the cameras with the same cable. Wired connections will have no lag in the video system and not congest your WiFi network.

Decide On The Router Location

You'll need to have a central location for the router where all of the cameras run into. Try to pick a central location for this router so that you have to run the least amount of ethernet cable possible. For example, if you are putting cameras on the four corners of your home underneath the roof, you may want to install the router in your attic. You can then run a single Ethernet cable to your roof, plug it into a router, and then run shorter cables to each camera.
