It's Not Too Late for a Screen Protector
Well, it's too late to actually protect the screen. But applying a screen protector now can at least make your phone usable. You don't want to be running your fingers over jagged glass. Try to get a screen protector that is fairly flexible, so it will fit into the cracks and chips.
Before you apply the screen protector, try to move any excess glass with something like a toothbrush. Don't use a paper towel or napkin, because the fibers are more likely to get caught in the screen.
If you don't have a screen protector, you can use transparent tape.
You Can Use Super Glue, Sort Of
If you have just a small crack in your screen or a small chip, you might be able to prevent it from immediately getting worse through the use of super glue. Use a toothpick to apply a small amount of super glue directly to the crack or chip. Don't fiddle with it! If you fiddle with it, you're just likely to get the toothpick itself stuck to the screen. Let it dry completely. The screen at least will be usable, but the glue is never going to be perfectly flush to the screen.
Protect the Rest of the Phone
In addition to all the above, throw a shock-proof case on your phone if you can. That way, if you drop it again, the force is going to be evenly distributed. A lot of phone cracks don't happen when the glass front itself is hit, but rather when a corner of the phone strikes the ground. If you have cushioning around the phone, you're far less likely to see those cracks start to spider web if you drop it again. And that means you'll have a case available for when you get your phone fixed.
With all that being said, you can only delay further damage, not avoid it. A cracked screen is going to get worse over time; that's unavoidable.
